The Penrod family of Pinetop homesteaded Sierra Springs Ranch in the early 1920's and farmed the land until the early 1960's. Gray Madison purchased the Ranch in the 1960's and built the first home on the property. The Pueblo was occupied by the caretaker and his very large family. The next home that was built was what is now know as the Main House and was used by the Madison family and their friends as a summer home. Mr. Madison was an avid outdoorsman and built the trout lake, a heliport and golf facilities on the property.
After Mr. Madison's death in the early 60's the Ranch was sold to Jack Hogan, a Chicago businessman and horseman. He built the Honeymoon cottage for himself and the Santa Fe and the Cheyenne cabins for his daughters. He also built the waterfall on the trout lake, added the bass lake, gazebo and tennis court.
In the early 1980's the Ranch was purchased by Empire Machinery Company of Arizona and was used as a retreat for the company president, Mr. Jack Whiteman, and his upper management team. The Main House was used for meetings and parties for the company executives.
In 1991 the Ranch was purchased by Don and Barbara Ottosen, converted into a Guest Ranch and was renamed Sierra Springs Ranch. They remodeled all of the existing homes and cabins, added several more and built the conference center.
In 1997 Neal DuCharme purchased the Ranch and has continue operating it as an exclusive mountain getaway for people from all over the country. The Ranch will cease its Guest Ranch activities in September of 2005 and will be transformed into an exclusive gated community for those that wish to have a home in a pristine environment with a long and interesting history.
